Literacy and Numeracy Focus Reflection

 

Literacy and numeracy are essential skills that form the foundation of a child's education. They not only help students understand and interact with the world but also prepare them for future success. Within literacy and numeracy, three important indicators stand out: taking responsibility every day for the teaching of numeracy, teaching targeted vocabulary lessons, and taking responsibility every day for the teaching of literacy.

First, taking responsibility every day for the teaching of numeracy means that teachers should actively engage in teaching mathematical concepts in a way that is meaningful to students. This involves not just presenting numbers and equations but also helping students see how math applies to real-life situations. For example, using examples from cooking or shopping can make numeracy more relatable. When teachers take this responsibility, they help students build confidence and skills in math, which are crucial for their academic journeys and everyday lives.

Next, teaching targeted vocabulary lessons is vital in both literacy and numeracy. Vocabulary is the building block of communication and understanding. When teachers focus on specific words and phrases, they enable students to express their thoughts clearly and comprehend what they read or hear. Effective vocabulary instruction can boost reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and even mathematical understanding. For instance, knowing terms like “sum” or “difference” helps students follow math instructions better. Thus, targeted vocabulary lessons are key in improving literacy and numeracy skills.

Lastly, taking responsibility for the teaching of literacy—covering reading, writing, speaking, viewing, and listening—is paramount. Literacy is not just about reading books; it involves understanding and communicating through various formats. Teachers need to foster a love for reading and help students express their ideas through writing and speaking. When students can listen actively and view different types of media with a critical eye, they become more engaged and informed citizens.

In conclusion, literacy and numeracy are interconnected skills critical for students’ holistic development. By taking responsibility for teaching numeracy every day, focusing on vocabulary, and nurturing all aspects of literacy, educators lay a strong foundation for students to thrive in school and beyond.

Caring relationship

   Wednesday, November the 1 st , there was no class that day because students will be going on a field trip to the museum and the agriculture that is due with their environmental study and a KCS. Our associate teacher allowed us to accompany her students during the field trip. She told us to take care of her students because some of them are naughty. Firstly, we gather them in the middle and sing with them before their transport comes. They are very excited to see everything at the museum because they already know that all the things there are made in Kiribati and the history of our country is also stored there. Half an hour later, the transport arrived. We tell them to form two lines and march to the truck. They got on the truck slowly and sat properly.
