Lesson planning

During my practicum at BTC JSS, I learned the importance of preparing detailed lesson plans to guide my teaching and help students achieve the learning objectives. I understood that a lesson plan is like a teacher’s manual, showing what students should learn, how I will teach it, and how their learning will be assessed. By linking my lesson plans to the curriculum standards and weekly planner, I was able to ensure that my lessons were organized, aligned with school requirements, and covered the topics in a logical sequence. For example, during weeks 9 and 10, I taught an English topic on “Drama” and linked it to my weekly planner. On the first day, students learned the definition and features of drama, while on the next day, they read a drama and identified the main and minor characters. This helped students understand the lesson objectives and achieve the expected learning outcomes.

I also focused on including all essential components in my lesson plans, such as objectives, introduction, development, application or assessment, teaching aids, conclusion, and evaluation. I started each lesson by clearly stating the objectives and introducing the topic to engage students. During the development phase, I guided the learning activities and used teaching aids that supported understanding. I included assessment tasks to check students’ comprehension and concluded each lesson by summarizing key points. Reflecting on each lesson allowed me to identify strengths and areas for improvement, which helped me grow as a teacher.

Another key experience during my practicum was preparing the classroom and providing relevant, affordable, and locally available teaching resources. I created teaching aids using simple materials like sticks, boxes, and paper, which helped make lessons engaging and practical. By using these effective resources, students were able to understand concepts better and participate actively in class activities.

Overall, my practicum experience showed me that careful lesson planning, alignment with curriculum standards, and the use of meaningful teaching resources are crucial for effective teaching. Preparing well in these areas allowed me to deliver lessons confidently and ensure that students could achieve the learning goals successfully.
