Professional Development

Reflecting on my essay, I now understand even more how important professional development is for teachers and how it has helped me grow during my teaching practical at ETI JSS Tarawaieta and BTC JSS. The three indicators I discussed—participating in training, sharing ideas with others, and updating my personal development plan—were not just ideas in theory. I actually experienced them in real situations, and they helped me become a better teacher.

The first indicator, joining professional development and applying it in the classroom, strongly connects to my experience at ETI JSS Tarawaieta. I joined a workshop run by the Exam Unit staff about using group activities in English lessons. After that training, I used small group discussions with my students. This experience showed me how professional development can make a real change in teaching. Students became more active, talked with their classmates, and learned from each other. Seeing them enjoy the activity made me realize that applying what I learned from training really helps improve the lesson. It also made me more confident in trying new methods.

The second indicator, sharing ideas and supporting peers, also relates to my teaching practice. At both ETI JSS and BTC JSS, I shared new teaching activities with my fellow trainee teachers. I told them about using role plays and group discussions, and they tried these ideas in their own classes. This made me feel proud because I was not only learning from others but also helping others learn from me. Working together with other trainees made lesson planning easier and more enjoyable. It also showed me that good teaching happens when teachers support each other.

The third indicator, updating my professional development plan to match the school’s goals, connects to my experience of focusing on classroom management. Both schools aimed to build good discipline and respect among students. So, I practiced praising students and choosing role models of the week. This helped improve student behavior and supported the school’s goals. I learned that a teacher’s personal growth should always support the school’s vision.

Overall, my experiences during practical clearly showed me that professional development makes teaching stronger, helps students learn better, and builds teamwork among teachers.
